Fly Fishing Seminar by Rabun TU

Ever wanted to try your hand at fly-fishing for trout but never learned the in’s and out’s of it?
Ever wonder why some people seem to get so “hooked” on it? Now’s your chance! The Rabun Chapter of Trout Unlimited is planning a half-day fly-fishing for trout seminar for adults (male and female 16 years and older).
The seminar will cover equipment, casting, knots and entomology (the bugs we imitate for fish to eat).Instructors include Federation of Flyfishermen Certified Instructors and other experts for a hands-on learning experience that will be helpful and fun.

WHERE: The Rabun County Recreation Center off Highway 441 near Rabun County Middle and High School complex.

Our group went to try out the Chauga River that Chattooga River Fly Shop had in the last presentation at our monthly meeting. We caught 60+ fish. Dalton had the high mark with 25 by his self.

NC Hatchery Supported Trout Waters Closed to Fishing, March 1 – April 4

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 20, 2015) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will close approximately 1,000 miles of Hatchery Supported Trout Waters to fishing one-half hour after sunset on Feb. 28 and reopen them at 7 a.m. on April 4. 

While fishing is closed, Commission personnel will stock all Hatchery Supported Trout Waters in preparation for opening day. Staff stocks Hatchery Supported Trout Waters, which are marked by green-and-white signs, at frequent intervals in the spring and early summer every year.

This year, Commission personnel will stock approximately 926,000 trout — 96 percent of which average 10 inches in length, with the other 4 percent exceeding 14 inches in length.

While fishing on Hatchery Supported Trout Waters, anglers can harvest a maximum of seven trout per day, with no minimum size limit or bait restriction. Hatchery Supported Trout Waters are open from 7 a.m. on the first Saturday in April until one-half hour after sunset on the last day of February the following year.

Georgia Foothills guest speakers for our February monthly meeting on the 12th are  Karl and Karen
Ekberg who own and operate Chattooga River Fly Shop in South Carolina.

 Karl was raised in New Hampshire where he started his fly fishing and tying career, in the White Mountains, chasing wild trout.  After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, New York, he began his Executive Chef career, back in the heart of the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
 
Karen was born and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and has been an avid quilter, and fly girl for years. Many of her products incorporating fly fishing and the outdoor life are displayed for sale in the Fly Shop.
 
Karl and Karen have owned the Chattooga River Fly Shop since August 2012, and after two and half years they have outgrown the current shop location and are moving the Fly Shop just a half mile from its current location to 6832 Highlands Highway.  They have a full service Fly Shop with guide services, all the necessary fly fishing accessories, waders, boots, apparel, fly tying materials and tying classes, rods and reels for the beginner to the expert, and home interior products as well, from local artisans.

Jeff Samsel is an outdoor writer, photographer and editor who actually lives in Clarkesville, GA.  He writes mostly fishing how-to and where-to stories for magazines and websites.  He's authored two books and contributed chapters to several others.  Fishing adventures have lured Jeff as far from home as Canada's Yukon Territory and Brazil's Amazon River basin - although his absolute favorite fishing destination is only about 45 minutes from his house within the rugged gorge of a crashing mountain river.
