October monthly Meeting, October 11th

Foothills meeting this coming Thursday, 10/11, at the United Community Bank in Clarkesville
468 W Louise St
Clarkesville, GA 30523

The social time is around 6:00 - 6:30 with the program starting at 6:30...
Our guest speaker for the October Foothills meeting will be Jeff Durniak. Jeff, as we all know, is the Regional Fisheries Biologist for north Georgia. Under his guidance as not only a professional biologist but as an avid trout angler we have seen trout fishing in north Georgia evolve from mostly put and take to a wide variety of opportunities including catch & release, put, grow and take, trophy wild brown trout and Delayed Harvest streams. This Thursday, Jeff will present a comprehensive program on how to make your Fall, Winter and Spring Delayed Harvest fishing the best it can be. He will also have handouts available featuring his own personal guidelines for how he fishes for success throughout our best seasons. You don't want to miss this one!
This could be the best program of the year to bring a newbie to our meeting and give them an excellent opportunity to shorten their learning curve. And don't forget, Unicoi Outfitters has available free Trout Unlimited memberships for new members. So bring your who's curious about what you do, bring a young person who needs an alternative to video games or just grab someone in the grocery store!

2018 OAD Cancelled

NO OUTDOOR ADVENTURE DAY THIS SEPTEMBER, BUT UNICOI STILL HAS LOTS TO OFFER

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Aug. 14, 2018) – Each September, Unicoi State Park typically hosts an Outdoor Adventure Day as part of National Hunting and Fishing Day, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Sadly, the event is cancelled this year due to the tropical storm damage experienced at Unicoi and other Northeast Georgia locations.

Back in late May, Tropical Storm Alberto dumped 14 inches of rain on White County, causing significant issues to infrastructure across the county. Many facilities, including Smithgall Woods, Hardman Farm Trail and Unicoi, experienced damaging effects.

Tropical storm damage at Unicoi included the loss of several pedestrian bridges and the access road leading to the traditional site of the Unicoi Outdoor Adventure Day. While these areas are scheduled for repair, it will not be in time for the September event. Event planners are grateful for their supportive volunteer workforce, and the interest of the public, and look forward to coming back bigger and better in September 2019.

Planning a trip to Unicoi this fall? No problem. In fact, there are still plenty of available activities for park visitors to enjoy. More info at http://www.unicoilodge.com.

For more information, call the DNR office in Gainesville at 770-535-5498. To check out other exciting National Hunting and Fishing Day events, visit https://georgiawildlife.com/get-involved/nhfday

Smithgall Woods

Will Wagner, General Manager at Smithgall Woods, asked me to get the following message out to as many trout fishermen as possible:

"Due to June floods, the interior of Smithgall Woodswill be a construction zone and off limits until roughly 12/1. During this time, the park will only be able to take five reservations per fishing day and permit fishing in Section 1 only."
More info about the limitations on fishing should be available from the Dukes reservation desk, 706-878-3087.

Can you please get this out to all of the TU chapters in the state?

Call me if you have any questions about this at 678-947-6112.

Thanks,

S Gregg Johnson

July and August are challenging months for our chapter meetings. Members are busy and are often traveling. It’s also a challenge to book speakers. This year let’s try something different. Bring your tools, vice and some materials and tie some flies and swap some tales. We’ll order up some pizza and spend the time visiting together. If there is something you would like to bring up and discuss, we can do that also. If you have something to share, by all means come and share. I think we can make this an interesting time. Leaky Wader Roundup

Turn in those leaky waders and Doris Riggs will create a whole new purpose that extends their life! Doris will create Boot Bags for our ladies who attend Casting for Recovery events. Carl has ordered special CFR patches to be added to these "bags."

You can bring them to the Rock Creek Hatchery at the March 10th meeting or drop them off anytime at Faith Presbyterian Church in BR (across from the Browns Feed and Seed.) Just leave a note the leaky waders are for Carl Riggs.
